if u sleep with a bra on first of all why second of all how
the breath of life.
i am absolutely smitten with the mind and being of my humble, intelligent, redeemed, joyful south african sister mandisa haarhoff. i just adore this young woman, and i love everything about these photos.
i love that these photos look like a little love story. i love that each of these moments looks stolen. i love that the light in them looks so pure. i love that these photos, like our friendship, were discovered rather than choreographed. i love that our afros, in mandisa’s words, are just so gangsta!
there they stand, two strangers, two individuals, two whole persons looking forward at a vast expanse of possibilities. they stand complete. and then they meet. and instead of wanting, there’s joy. they meet and instead of competition for lesser and greater, there are two equals in service to one another.
and when they breathe each other in, when they press together forehead to forehead, mind to mind, thought to thought, sharing ideas and struggles and doubts, when they experience each other’s silent beings, allowing themselves to rest in the other’s presence - they are one. in that oneness there is stillness, and there is purity, and there is balance, and there is peace.
mandisa told me about the maori greeting where two people touch foreheads & noses, close their eyes, and share the breath of life. i think we may have missed the mark, but we certainly share the breath and blood of life and i’m grateful for it.
we share breath and there are no questions of boyfriend or girlfriend seeking or husband or wife hunting. we share breath and there is no loneliness or senseless yearning. we share breath and there are no doubts about the divine hand who has written and bound our narratives together by blood. we share breath and with it acknowledge our eternal gratitude and sing praises to the one who gave us the breath to share.
I’m going to get to where I’m going. As I believe, so it is for me.
Oh my god, this might just be my new favorite picture. Beautiful.
I owe every bit of my game to The Fresh Prince
